ABOUT THE PROFESSOR

Academic background and professional experience:

  • Chemistry Degree at the “Universidad de Navarra”, Pamplona, Spain (1999-2004).

  • Doctorate (Ph.D) in Chemistry at the “Universidad de Navarra”, in a "sandwich" program with the "Leibniz Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie" (FMP) in Berlin, Germany (2004-2009).

  • Posdoctoral experience at the Department of Biochemistry (IBqM) from the "Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro" (UFRJ), Brazil (2009-2011).

  • Posdoctoral experience at the "Laboratory for Biomolecular Modeling (LBM), EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland (2015-2016).

  • Currently: Assistant Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences, in the Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Department (BioTecFar) from the UFRJ, Brazil. I develop my research activities at the Molecular Modeling and 3D-QSAR laboratory ("Laboratório de Modelagem Molecular e 3D-QSAR", ModMolQSAR).

Research:

My interests are primarily focused on the study of the 3D structure of proteins, their structure-function relationships, and the design of drugs that can modify that function. To achieve this goal, in the ModMolQSAR laboratory we use molecular modeling techniques, and we work in collaboration with different experimental groups acting in the areas of organic synthesis, protein purification, structure determination by SAX, NMR or X-ray crystallography, among others.

I work mainly with neglected diseases and cancer.

ModMolQSAR Laboratory

The Molecular Modeling and 3D-QSAR laboratory (ModMolQSAR) is connected to the department of medicines and pharmaceuticals, located in the Center for Health Sciences (CCS) from the UFRJ, Brazil. It is coordinated by Professor Dr. Carlos Rangel Rodrigues in collaboration with Professor Dr. Alessandra Souza Teles Mendonça.
